Returnal reviews5/15/2023 ![]() You'll see a pop-up message at the game's start regarding the shader progress if your PC's CPU has less than six cores. They never affected the gameplay, but they were pretty jarring. The game suffered minor graphical stutters, similar to the ones in Sackboy: A Big Adventure. Overall, the game danced between 56fps and 60fps, which is similar to the PS5’s frame rate. Returnal maintained a strong frame rate on our testbed that has an Intel Core i7-10700K CPU, Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 GPU, and 16GB of DDR4 RAM. ![]() It also has numerous options, letting you tweak the quality of lighting, post-processing effects, and environmental elements. Returnal is a GPU-heavy game, so the better your GPU, the better performance you can squeeze out of it.įortunately, Returnal comes equipped with a handy benchmark tool that helps you strike the right settings balance for your machine. If you want the full-on experience that includes 4K resolution and ray-tracing tech, your PC needs an AMD Ryzen 9 5900X or Intel i9-11900K CPU, AMD Radeon RX 6950 XT (16GB) or Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti (12GB) GPU, and an incredible 32GB of RAM. To reach the game's 1080p, 60fps recommended system settings, your PC needs an AMD Ryzen 7 2700X or Intel i7-8700 CPU, AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT (12GB) or Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super (8GB) GPU, 16GB of RAM, and 60GB of SSD storage. Returnal includes a wide range of display options, but it comes at a hefty hardware cost. The game also features superb 3D audio options, which is a great inclusion if you have compatible headphones. Returnal makes full use of the DualSense controller, including the adaptive triggers and haptic feedback. For older GPUs, you can use Nvidia NIS (Nvidia Image Scaling), which uses a similar technique that lowers the image resolution and upscales it to native resolution. Whichever you use depends on your GPU, but both work the same way-they drop the game's resolution and use cutting-edge temporal algorithms to boost frame rates and upscale them to create an almost identical image to the native resolution. Display options include both Ultrawide (21:9) and Super Ultrawide (32:9) support, as well as Nvidia DLSS and AMD FSR support (Sackboy did not support the latter). In fact, Returnal shares a good amount of that game’s PC feature set. The port comes courtesy of Climax Studios, the company that also worked on the recent Sackboy: A Big Adventure PC release. The PC version has even better graphics, thanks to the game’s ability to tap higher resolutions and true ray-traced reflections that make the neon light show pop even brighter against the dark backgrounds. Each of the six biomes offers a unique look at the weathered alien civilization that once occupied Atropos. Returnal’s PS5 debut was a visual showcase that wowed audiences with stunning visuals, impressive lighting, and robust particle effects. The included free DLC, Tower of Sisyphus, leans into that notion even further, providing an endless mode for anyone interested in that pure arcade-shooter feel. Returnal manages to feel epic and mysterious while also triggering the same dopamine release as a high score on a leaderboard. ![]() These moments make Returnal feel most like Housemarque’s older titles that feature breakneck, bullet-hell action where you're constantly moving and shooting. On top of that, a successful reload cuts the weapon cooldown time (similar to how Active Reloads work in the Gears of War series). You build adrenaline by killing enemies without taking damage, which boosts your damage output and visibility. ![]() Selene is hardly defenseless, and the super-tight controls ensure she is both nimble and resourceful. However, it doesn't make the game easy, just easier.ĭifficulty discourse aside, Returnal has engaging, fast-paced gameplay that features wave after wave of enemies filling the screen with multi-colored projectiles. These updates make the game more accessible, which is a good thing. The co-op multiplayer addition also softens the challenge a bit, as the players can revive each another. Returnal now lets you suspend your play session, so you no longer lose progress if you must leave your computer (or worse, if you experience a crash-more on that in a bit).
